Clean drinking water is one of the essentials of life. No life could exist on this planet without it. Vegetation and wildlife depend on this to survive. Humans must also have clean drinking water to survive. Water is actually a building block of our existence on this planet. To be without it would be without life itself. We not only use or need clean drinking water for actual consumption, we need it for brushing out teeth, washing ourselves, and other basic personal hygiene regimens. Not only that, we also need clean drinking water to cook with, and wash our eating utensils and cookware. Therefore, the human population cannot afford to have contaminated water. Contaminated water can be the cause of widespread sickness and disease.

Diarrhea is a common result of viral and bacterial infections that have been waterborne. When water sources come into contact with human feces and other pollution from poor sanitation, viral and bacterial infections develop. These viral and bacterial infections become waterborne and are distributed to the populous. The water may be consumed directly or indirectly within a hygiene regimen. Once human contact has been made with contaminated water, disease is sure to follow—and usually with some form of diarrhea. All that is needed is contact with the skin, an open wound, eyes, ears, nose, or throat.

Diarrhea is actually a symptom of the disease that causes the uncontrollable passing of loose to watery, and in more severe cases, bloody stools. This is absolutely devastating to the body as it looses essential fluids and become dehydrated. The human body will also loose essential nutrients and vitamins with the gross elimination of diarrhea. Not only that, poor hygiene and continued poor sanitation may cause the disease to spread from person to person.

Diseases such as e.coli and hepatitis A can be spread through contaminated water. Illnesses such as dysentery, cholera, and typhoid fever can all be waterborne. All it takes is a gulp of water to become infected.

Cases of contaminated water usually occur in areas that do not have a filtered water source system, poor or no sanitation system, and within developing communities.

Filtration systems are an important part of creating a safe or safer environment for clean drinking water. Chlorine bleach may be used to actually decontaminate water. First, you must find out exactly how much you should use per unit of unfiltered water. It is usually a few drops per gallon of unfiltered water. However, it is quite important to have access to a knowledgeable authority on the subject to discover the appropriate amounts to use. Contact your local healthcare authority to find out how much chlorinated bleach to use per unit of water.

Other filtration systems will more likely be a straining process. Even with proper straining, it may still need further decontamination methods such as boiling. Boiling strain-filtered water is an added measure of precaution that may save a life.
